Post march/demo/protest dates here!
« on: Nov 13, 2010, 03:09:37 PM »
I'm feeling frustrated at not knowing if and when they're are protests about the cuts. I'm wondering if people would post details here, not just for my benefit, but an information sharing kind of thing.
Oh and I may bump from time to time.  :)

Looks like the TUC have realised that March 2011 is too long to wait...4th December looks like a good 'un.

Nice one.  What a great idea for a thread.  Let's keep it near the top (bump)

How do we get the mods to notice this for a sticky? I was going to do an RTM but then realised that was only for naughty posts.

I RTM any post that brings attention to something I want the moderators to consider doing - not just the naughty ones.

Any particular cuts or in general?

A few students from my Uni got caught up and detained by the police after the demo on the 10th, freshers out of their depth .. wrong time, wrong place.

What do we want ... um?
When do we want it, now (or whenever you can, sorry for sunding rude but ...)!

Is this the start of Brits revolting a la French? Will we burn some more placards, storm barricades? Oh and about that 4.8 trillion national debt ..?
<insert something witty here>

The national debt is proportionately lower than it was when the welfare state was introduced + Vodaphone and Philip Green of TopShop have substantial multi-billion pound tax bills that could have helped pay off the deficit if the ConDems hadn't written them off.

I can remember the atmosphere of austerity of 1949-51, it surrounded my first memories.   Yet we created not only the NHS but an entire system of welfare that implemented the recommendations of the Beveridge Report, that had been so widely popular with the public.   People queued for hours for a copy.     What was brought in in the middle of massive deficit (the country was bankrupt) was the basis of greater social justice that people have taken for granted ever since:

Family Allowances Act 1945 , National Insurance (Industrial Injuries) Act 1946, National Insurance Act 1946, National Health Service Act 1946, Pensions (Increase) Act 1947, Landlord and Tenant (Rent Control) Act 1949, National Insurance (Industrial Injuries) Act 1948, National Insurance Act 1949.

But we shouldn't be discussing here - sorry.  This is for dates there are other threads for discussion of tactics or we should make them.

This seems a useful site for info on resistance
