What are you reading?
« on: Apr 19, 2009, 04:12:45 PM »
Been a while since we've had one of these. As it's the end of the Easter holiday period, let's hear what you've been reading...

I've been reading Margaret Forster's biography of Daphne Du Maurier. It's really well-written and is a fascinating study of how the repression of one's sexuality can completely influence all of your relationships. It's also given me a list of her books to read, other than Rebecca and Jamaica Inn, which are all I've managed so far.

I've just finished Bernard Schlink's The Reader, which was a short but v thoughtful read - not sure if I want to see the film now - and just started The Luminous Life of Lily Aphrodite by Beatrice Colin, which I've heard nothing about, but the cover looked good.  ;D

one of neil gaiman's sandman graphic novel series.

and vaguely a book called 'the harmony silk factory' and joseph heller's autobio.

i don't seem to have properly read a new novel in ages - just graphic novels and zines.

I absolutely loved Frenchman's Creek.
I might put the Forster biography on my next-to-read list.

At the moment I am  reading Nightwood by Djuna Barnes, which is incredibly dense and which appears to take me ages to finish.
I am mixing this with stories from The Aleph by Jorge Luis Borges and with Escape from Freedom by Erich Fromm.

i kept trying this a little while back. i bet i'd like it if i focused enough, but it was just requiring too much attention. i think i'll try it again another time.

It's engaging enough.

Skinny Dip - Carl Hiaasen. Upstairs book.

I really like Carl Hiassen, when I need something frivolous. Very funny.
