2nd Child
« on: Dec 19, 2017, 09:31:33 PM »
Hello,

My wife and I are thinking of having a 2nd child.  Our son is 17months and amazing!!  We had him through IUI which was part funded on the NHS,  I went to the doctor this morning to start the ball rolling and the doctor seemed unsure about referring me as it was the 2nd child.  Does anyone know or been able to have a 2nd child through the NHS or have you had to go private?  xx

Your wife still isn't producing sperm, would that help persuade the gp to refer you?

I'm afraid that I think you're not eligible if you have already have a child - even if it is the child of only one of you (eg second marriage where one partner already has child from first marriage). I know that these things vary from health board to health board, and change over time, so i could be wrong - but on the whole they haven't got more generous than they used to be as far as I'm aware.

At least, if you got pregnant with IUI without too much difficulty last time, hopefully you will find the same again. Good luck!

That last reply might be wrong. I've been told I am eligible for NHS fertility treatment as I have proven fertility issues, despite the fact my partner and I have a baby together. That seems quite generous, so it might be worth asking!
Not, sadly, the real KT. But I do love how she writes.

Update:

With our first child we still had to pay for the sperm and the actual IUI but all the tests before etc were free.  We have been told it will be the same this time and are in the process of being referred for treatment again.  Already paid for our sperm (same donor!!!) :-)
