They had loads of them for 14p because it's a small T£sco's attached to a petrol station in a very poor neighbourhood and so stocking the shelves with high priced items to recoup the cost of the shop space, doesn't seem to work out too well if hardly anyone going there knows what a passion fruit is any more than I do, and is definitely not going to shell out £1.10 to find out. What I'm hoping is that it's some kind of wonder food and GB can tell me all about it (as of old), and then I can leap on my bike and race back to get the rest. Anyway, in the meanwhile, these particular passion fruits are best before 3rd April and according to the packet "make a vibrant topping to any dessert", which would be fine, if I ate dessert but I only eat fruit. Maybe they mean passion fruits can tart up an ordinary fruit salad made from apples, bananas, grapes and kiwis, which I also have. But I don't think so, these passion fruits look more like ornaments. They feel kind of ornamental because they're not very heavy given their size and they have smooth, purple skins, with no 'give'. They're with the bananas because I bet they're not ripe at all.

You're lucky, l LOVE passion fruit! They're super tangy, you just cut them open and slurp the juicy pips inside.  (Don't eat the outside!). They're good on yoghurt but I eat it on its own. Not sure about their super-fruit qualities but I'm drooling just thinking about them  :)

T&C: normally when you buy a passion fruit it is hard and smooth on the outside - it is perfectly ok to eat it like this. It will taste yummy but be a little bit sharp.
If you leave them they start to go a bit wrinkly - this is fine! They will start to feel lighter and sort of hollow as well, as they lose moisture, but this means they are getting sweeter.
So, if you're having them for the first time, try one as soon as you buy it (while it is still smooth and hard) and leave another to go wrinkly and try it like that, then see which you prefer. I like both. They're ideal in that respect - they'll keep for a very long time before they actually go off (in fact I'm not sure I've ever had one go off).
Simply cut them in half (the skin is quite tough) and scoop the insides out, seeds and all. They are small and one fruit is barely a mouthful, but it goes further if you stir into yoghurt or use to top a cake etc. Or make a cocktail, obviously :D

I have tasted delicious puddings flavoured with passion fruit, made by various  Brazilian students. It's quite a faff though, so I just eat them as fruit like Musette described.

If you're a recipe kind of person, look up not only passion fruit but maracuja. The taste and texture is very very similar, though they look very different on the outside.

Actually, I was thinking about what to do with the shells because they're too nice to throw away.

I made a smoothie today with my new blender.

One apple
One banana
Four massive strawberries
Eight grapes
A squeeze of lemon.

Delicious and there is some left for later.

 :)

Two bananas. Tomorrow I will buy grapes, apples, strawberries and a lemon and pulverise them to make a delicious smoothie.
