Thanks for the link to the interview.
Some of the stuff he says is really weird though, no?

'With your average masochist, if the dominant is just slightly off-script or off-key: [snaps fingers] screwed up, gone wrong. Letís try again.'

Umm.

I don't know - the film wasn't what I wanted it to be, but I'm still pleased I watched it.
I'm also quite curious about the Berberian Sounds Studio.

I'd sell you to satan for one corn chip.

Well yeah. I thought maybe he could be referring to how specific people can be in their tastes: for example in the case of verbal humiliation? *grasps at straws*

The weirder part for me was the bit where he talks about penetration being removed as a possibility because the film is set in a world of women.  ::)

Me too. Though to be fair, it was the interviewer (a man, I assume) who put it like that.

Some of the more terrifying objects I've ever seen have been in dyke bedside cabinets  ;D

*edit* oops missed that it was the interviewer.

Strickland says this in the interview:

"And when Cynthia really punishes Evelyn instead of pretend-punishes Evelyn, itís horrible in a non-sexual way."

I actually found this part of the film quite human and funny. And necessary too.

To be fair the assumption that the director thinks so too is probably not so far fetched - the sex in it was all back-rubs and cunnilingus.

Yet still better than 'Blue is the warmest colour'.

Agree, the part I found less ok was in the lecture hall where Evelyn asks her odd question but it seemed as if Cynthia was keen on putting her down.

Actually I've just remembered. Someone I was involved with, years ago now, wanted to shift our relationship to a BDSM dynamic, which I had never done. With me as the Top/Domme. At the time, it was impossible for me to contemplate. Because I just couldn't get my head around how I could take up that role, as it seemed to me, under their 'control' or primarily at their behest. I couldn't be ordered to order them around!

But then, this type of conundrum is often there, for the Domme, in some form, I now see. And I found the exploration of that in the film really interesting.

Sorry to go off on a tangent but how much moth/butterfly content is there in the film?

There is quite a bit of footage of dead moths/ butterflies in frames.
And I think there is one bit of fluttering moths. Unless I dreamt that.

There is quite a lot of moth footage. Close ups of individual moths  and susurrating clouds of moths. And many dead moths with pins in frames.
