Gingerbeer Fundraising 2014
« on: Sep 21, 2014, 09:44:59 PM »
This thread is here to discuss a fundraising initiative for Gingerbeer.  As many of you will know, we need to make Gingerbeer into a self-sustaining entity or it will not continue.  There are a multitude of steps involved in doing this, but at the moment we're out of money.  We're looking to raise £5,000 by New Year to update some of the site, pay someone to do general admin work and pay for ongoing site costs for a year.  If we reach the target, then we can do some proper development work to build longevity into Gingerbeer.

I'll be creating a thread in where to meet for an event in December but all other initiatives will be posted in this thread.  If you already know some of them or where they are, then please post them here as it's going to take me some time to get all of the bits and pieces together.  If you post a simple sentence, then I'll copy the relevant posts into this first post as we go along so they don't get lost amongst conversations.

Evict, have you thought of the crowdsourcing route?
I know you don't necessarily have the time to make it happen, but you might.
Or someone else on here might - I'm afraid I can't at the moment.

I was thinking of a "GB Skills Auction".  Beeries offer a skill or service and people bid for it, with all proceeds going to GB. People could bid on the night, or in advance.  Ideas I had cover a wide range of talents and costs and include:
  • An offer of a days garden clearing / landscaping
  • Baking a cake for a special event
  • Half day personal training
  • A day of DIY
  • 2 hours ironing (for those hanky ironing freaks on GB)
  • A days "de-clutter"
  • England Football Ticket (including an explanation of the off-side rule)
  • A days spring cleaning
  • Creative haircut
  • Mystery Date
  • A day with a personal shopper
  • Music recital
  • A photographic session
  • Cooking of a three course meal for two (with or without a romantic theme)
  • Roller blading lesson
  • Tarot reading
  • Carwash
  • Guitar/Piano lesson
  • Wine tasting event

Of course it is all dependent on Beeries actually donating their time, skills, resources and other Beeries wanting to bid for them.

Well, it might or might not work, but just an idea for further development really.

Sorry for the repeat, thought this sat well in both threads.

The admin is done by EviCT but we need money to invest on a new platform. As it is the board cost a lot to maintain and doesn't bring enough revenue compared to the content site (Gingerbeer.co.uk). Revenue has dropped recently as users have moved away from the messageboard.

Evict, have you thought of the crowdsourcing route?
I know you don't necessarily have the time to make it happen, but you might.
Or someone else on here might - I'm afraid I can't at the moment.
I'm not sure around the protocols on crowdsourcing, so please correct any of my incorrect assumptions.  I wouldn't think you could do two crowd sourcing exercises in a short period and I would hope to do so for an app development at a later time?  I thought that you had to promise something to those who contributed, and usually at different levels for different level contributors.  I'm not sure what we have to give at the moment, though I'm sure we can come up with something but what should that be that doesn't then cost us all the money we raise?

is the general admin work something that can be done by volunteers?
I do most of the admin work as mentioned, but it's difficult for me to keep up with it all, create and migrate a new site, organise events and do my full-time job where I can't really access Gingerbeer.  I need help, we've had volunteers before and they've often done a great job and had to leave for a variety of reasons but it's a boring and isolated job and the person needs to be held accountable for what they do as they will be interacting with people in Gingerbeer's name.  The only truly fully successful experience we've had with this was when we paid someone.

At the GB Town Council meeting on Sunday, I agreed to draft a post which summarises the very basics of GB's financial status, and sets out all the ways in which Beeries past, present (and future!) can contribute to keeping Gingerbeer afloat.

I will post it shortly, but just wanted to explain how it was arrived at. EVicT has OK'd it, so it should be accurate. But if you notice any inaccuracies please let me know by IM.

If, once you've read the Sink or Swim post, you feel you want to give time, energy or skills - or further ideas - to help secure GB's future, it would be great if you could post in the thread.

    Your GB Needs YOU!

    THE BAD NEWS

It's sink or swim time for the GB messageboards. They aren't really sustainable in their current form.

The boards account for the largest share - by far - of the costs of running Gingerbeer. And they don't generate much income (whereas the content site http://www.gingerbeer.co.uk/ makes more money through things like advertising).

Short term, we need to raise a total of £5,000 to keep Gingerbeer (as a whole) afloat.

Longer term, EVicT will need to work out radical options for the messageboards. One option might be to create a readable archive of all old posts and a new, lighter system for the ongoing boards which will integrate better with the main site.

BUT, any longer term options will only be possible if GB can survive right now.

And survival of Gingerbeer is only likely if the past and present Gingerbeer community can rally round and demonstrate that there are good reasons for Gingerbeer to survive. And that there is energy and goodwill to muck in and make survival happen.

Because, short of a fairy godmother, raising £5,000 is only going to happen if the Gingerbeer community makes it happen.

    THE GOOD NEWS

    We can do it!

Gingerbeer is riddled with history, talent, intelligence, wit, cake skills, social connections and sheer bloodymindedness.

If some of that energy is directly invested in Gingerbeer over the coming months, the community past and present could help ensure its own survival.

So here's how you can help the Gingerbeer Sink or Swim Fund....

    **Spread the word**

Cut and paste this post, share it, or bits of it. Put snippets in your sig lines, emails, Facebook posts, dating profiles...
The URL for this post is: http://boards.gingerbeer.co.uk/index.php?topic=113629.msg3525649#msg3525649

    **Party harder!**

Come to the Gingerbeer Fundraiser Party 2014 and invite guests: http://boards.gingerbeer.co.uk/index.php?topic=113630.0

The Gingerbeer Fundraiser Party needs a venue, flyers, set up, promotion, ideas, prizes, skills and thrills - and party-goers. Make the party happen and make it sparkle!

You can also volunteer to do admin and keep records for the party - for instance by collating ideas in the Gingerbeer Fundraiser Party 2014 thread, or compiling party lists. PM EVicT if you would like to volunteer your Excel skills!

DIY a GB fundraising event. Tupperware. Underwear. Toys. Cakes. Books. Shaking a jar at the bar. Karaoke. You know you want to.

    **Shop Ginger**

Gingerbeer is now part of www.easyfundraising.org.uk, which enables you to make a donation to Gingerbeer every time you shop online at over 2,700 online retailers - including Amazon, Marks & Spencer, supermarkets, department stores, electricals - in fact almost all of the big stores. See the full list at: http://www.easyfundraising.org.uk/retailers/

Between around 1.5% (Amazon) and 6.5% (Marks & Spencer) of the money you spend on your online shopping will be donated by the retailer to Gingerbeer! You can also get discounts and deals from participating retailers at http://www.easyfundraising.org.uk/deals/

All you need to do is to register at http://www.easyfundraising.org.uk/create-an-account/ and choose to support Gingerbeer as a cause.

You can access the sign-up through a dedicated page on the GB website, too, at: http://www.gingerbeer.co.uk/?p=easyfundraising

You can also download a toolbar which appears below the browser bar on your computer. It reminds you to use easyfundraising.org.uk when you shop online, and shows you how much you have contributed: http://www.easyfundraising.org.uk/raise-more/donation-reminder/

You can raise extra money by recruiting friends (or other Beeries) to sign up via Facebook, email etc. See http://www.easyfundraising.org.uk/raise-more/referrals/

Lastly, there is a separate easysearch service for online searches.
You can set it as your browser homepage, and if you use it to make websearches, Gingerbeer will get a teeny donation every time you complete an online search (using Yahoo). Find out more at: http://gingerbeer.easysearch.org.uk/

Sign up! Sign up! Sign up! at at http://www.easyfundraising.org.uk/create-an-account/

This seems like a great way to raise money for Gingerbeer - especially in the run-up to Christmas.

    You can also:

Shop via the Gingerbeer Amazon store: http://www.gingerbeer.co.uk/?p=store

You don't pay more, but GB gets a small commission from whatever you buy, and your order is handled by Amazon in the usual way. You can also go direct to the store via this link: http://astore.amazon.co.uk/gingerbeer-21

Curate the Gingerbeer Amazon store: Do you have fabulous taste in books, films and music? Encyclopaedic LGBTQ knowledge? Do you know the best books for alternative families, natural childbirth or menopause? The shop needs restocking and sprucing up. If you think you could curate even a tiny corner of the shop, please send a PM to EVicT.

**Ginger up your Facebook and Twitter**

Like, follow, get notifications and share info at the Gingerbeer Facebook page:  https://www.facebook.com/GingerbeerUK?ref=ts&fref=ts

Follow Gingerbeer Lesbians on Twitter: https://twitter.com/Gingerbeer_UK?lang=en-gb  or Tweet to @Gingerbeer_UK

Be a Gingerbeer social media host: volunteer to maintain the Gingerbeer Facebook page or Twitter feed by sending a PM to EVicT with any previous experience.

**Cross-pollinate between the boards and the main site**

More revenue is generated when people click between the GB messageboards and the main Gingerbeer website http://www.gingerbeer.co.uk/

    Don't forget, main site contains:

    Listings: http://www.gingerbeer.co.uk/?p=listings

Bars and clubs, travel and accommodation, community groups, health and fitness, shops and services, culture and entertainment, dating and social groups... the most complete, up-to-date, UK-wide lesbian listings on the web, and the only address book you will ever need for a lovely, lively lesbian life.

    Calendar: http://www.gingerbeer.co.uk/?p=calendar

A calendar of bars and clubs, community groups and events, fitness and shopping, which you can sort by area of the country, or by type.

So keep hopping across to the main site, think about putting your GB events or other events that you know about up on the listings, and:

Share your one off event: http://www.gingerbeer.co.uk/?p=submit_event

Share your regular event or ongoing service: http://www.gingerbeer.co.uk/?p=submit_listing[/li]
**Promote Gingerbeer at events**

If you know that you will be in a room with hundreds (or even a handful) of lesbians or bi women in the foreseeable future, then lucky you! Don't forget to celebrate by talking your head off about Gingerbeer and letting people know how to find us: www.gingerbeer.co.uk

    **Donate or become a member**

Scrape out the pennies from your pockets or behind your sofa, ask for donations instead of gifts, shake a jar at GB meetings, or just remind people that they can donate or become a member.

    Become a member: http://www.gingerbeer.co.uk/?p=membership

For £20 a year, you'll be contributing to Gingerbeer and supporting a range of businesses which give you discounts.

    Make a donation: http://www.gingerbeer.co.uk/?p=membership

You can donate by credit card, or even better, set up a direct debit.

Any funds that you raise for GB can be donated by cheque or direct debit
(contact EVicT for address or account details).

    **Volunteer**

There are roles for behind the scenes volunteers at Gingerbeer HQ, including people with professional skills in:
    •   App design
    •   Website design
    •   Coding
    •   Copywriting
    •   Volunteer management

You can get training to become a Gingerbeer volunteer:
    •   Email administrator
    •   Listings administrator
    •   Messageboard or chatroom moderator

If you are interested in becoming a Gingerbeer Volunteer, then we will love you forever. Please PM EVicT.

**Keep everyone posted and add your ideas**

Report back on your fundraising, promotion and volunteering activity for the Sink or Swim Fund - or add more ideas - in this thread, or through your own posts and threads.

    ***************************

In January, EVicT will announce the grand total raised for the Gingerbeer Sink or Swim Fund. And then we will know for sure whether Gingerbeer has a future. And if we do, it will be down to you.

    Fantastic post MzB!

Just wondering if there is a way of selling a Gingerbeer membership as a gift voucher via Amazon, or on the main site, or both? You know, a bit like membership to the Tate, or whatever?

Then friends or family can give as a gift ? Or we can ask for it as a gift. Can that be done ?

I don't know Pearl. I doubt it though. Is there a reason why they couldn't go through and use the buttons  for donations / membership via the membership page below? I think that would probably work, and might be worth investigating?

I would suggest asking EVicT but I'm hoping / fearing her inbox will be overflowing with questions and offers of help (!).
