I've been trying to stay away from this thread about foxes - because i'm a hunt sabateur - i go out the night before the hunt and shoot the fox.

Foxes are beautiful - and have we not built on so much land they have no choice but to make their homes amongst the concrete urban sprawl ? I live in East London and am very lucky to have a garden backing on to allotments. I have a jungle for a garden  - overplanted by one of the gay men who used to live here and who had a bit of a homes and gardens vision of life! I am not a garderner and never will be but it looks beautiful and I know that it is full of birds and wildlife, and yes foxes wander in and out using it as a cut through to and from the allotments.

One of the most breathtaking sights I ever saw was a fox running down the middle of a silent snow covered street as I walked to the tube a couple of years ago. Its colour and beauty stood out against the whiteness.

If they can live with us then we should learn to respect the fact that because of the need for housing we have caused this.

Yes. We have a very kinky game that involves dressing up as hunter and prey.  ;D

I hope you have factored in the bugle and the beagles.

You don't have a bugle, it is still a hunting horn and beagles hunt hares not foxes. Perhaps all you anti's would think differently if you lived in the country and saw the real damage that "proper ie country foxes do". I do believe urban foxes are quite different but believe me country ones do not live on rubbish or in gardens, they are killing machines that can cost farmers over 10% of their income in lambs.

I DID live in the country Foxyladyee.

The HUNT trampled over land that there were told they were not welcome to go on in their pursuit of one little fox.  The Hunt doesn't even keep the numbers of foxes down, it was just a shameless excuse to go out and have fun.
Half of those who live in the countryside don't approve of hunting with hounds.
If you have to protect your livestock there are cheaper and more efficient ways of doing it than keeping packs of hounds.
My father was Treasurer of the Worcestershire hunt and even he concedes it was sport and nothing else.

The evidence is that hunting does not actually control fox populations anyway.

These results support the view taken by the Committee of Inquiry into Hunting with Dogs in England & Wales (Burns et al., 2000), who concluded that a ban on hunting is unlikely to result in an increase in fox abundance. They also refute the claims made by lobby groups that there was a substantial increase in fox numbers during FMD.

Dear Duke Don't talk to me about the Burns report - there are many issues beside number - ever heard of Charles Darwin, survival of fitest and evolution, or how the animal world actually works? The foxes cause the problems are the oldest, weakest or injured because they take easy pickings. These are the ones that hounds catch as the stronger ones get away so is very selective.

Pitty you didn't take the time for proper discussion /debate when we were together, you may have been "educated"

And Blythe no offence but your ripping apart is ludicrous. A hound weighs a lot more than a fox and when caught it is killed instantously by a quick nip on back of neck as is in any dogd nature. Should you doubt this ask Duke, I did not have ripped apart foxes on wall and all were caught by hounds.

I've seen a fox ripped apart by excited hounds. To be fair, I wouldnt have had it on my wall either.

No offence Foxylaydee but I used the verb ripping because that is what happened.  I didn't compute at what time the fox actually died, as I was more busy being outraged that my Father thought it a find day out to take his small children.  I vividly remember that the blood flew everywhere, and the participants gleefully watched and then blooded the latest recruit.
The hounds all had red faces and necks afterwards.

Now you can make silly digs at DukeofEarl about knowing her in the past if you so wish but it makes you look like a trifle bitter.
If you wish to make digs at me about hunting, please continue as that just makes you look like a Tory.
