Spiritualist Church
« on: Feb 13, 2012, 08:21:51 PM »
OK I know some of you might be psychics and may have been to Spiritualist churches so I want to share my latest experience with you.
It was some time ago I went to see a few psychics at Mysteries in London and I was often curious about mediumship, however, I haven't found psychics that I have seen to be very convincing but I know there are good psychics and bad psychics so I am still open to it. Anyway this Sunday I went to Balham Spiritualist church. It was a very strange experience rather like going to a very unpopular Christian church with very little membership old hymnals and an elderly man seeming to lead things and then this African woman on the altar. It turned out she was the medium.

OK so the congragation started singing very unenthusiastically to a recorded organ music - some Christian sounding hymns and after that the medium gave the address to the people about being positive and being aware of the spirit world and that some spirits decide to come back to the earth plane to help us. Which did sound kinda familiar.

Anyway she then started to chanel spirits and talk to people in the audience but what she was saying sounded very similar for each person, e.g. I have a person coming through small in stature who had abdominal problems in his life and he has a message etc.. after about 6 people she came to me and asked if she could read for me. She said there was a ghost looking out for me, a family member, a man, short in stature with abdominal problems.. I thought here we go again but then she said he is telling me you like to go into past lives and you have been doing this lately. I said yes I have actually last November I did an astral projection course and came out of my body and jumped into a past life. She then said if your light flickers it's him saying hello which weirdly, my friend kept telling me was happening when she was last visiting. Also he said to be careful crossing the road as he can't always be there to pull me back to safety, which is true I sometimes have near misses. She also said I like to be perfect or accurate in my work but you don't have to be perfect. So anyway I came away kinda impressed despite first impressions of wanting to run out the door.

so what do you think? what she for real?

Air my breath
And fire by spirit!

I fully accept that there are genuine psychic mediums, and sadly, charlatans...but I reckon, from what you've said about the points that were spot on- and impossible to guess- this sounds like the real deal to me. It would be quite a big leap to assume that someone interested in spiritualism would necessarily be into astral projection, and the other things you mention, again, would be a really lucky stab in the dark!

I've been wanting to visit a Spiritualist church for a few years now, never summoned the courage (churches scare the hell out of me; I feel more at home in stone circles)..though I've had a couple of v impressive tarot readings from genuine psychics, and I've seen Mia Dolan live. So, I can't compare notes really, but I must say your impression of the joint is more or less what I expected!

I'd go back, and see who else comes through with some good advice!

Abdominal probs- that tickled me.  ;D

I am a bit of sceptic when it comes to mediums, spiritualist churches etc - mainly because I think that they are very much "one size fits all".  I remember attending a workshop once where they talked about the Barnum Statements, and how you can ask questions/make statements which can be true for just about everyone in the room.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cold_reading  So I tend to take it with a bit of a pinch of  salt; and if I did find myself attending something like this, I think I would want more specific information before I personally read too much into it  - for example I would want to know if they could tell me the spirit's actual name; when they died; something not quite so random.  Having said that, I am able to "talk" to my own ancestor spirits, and I believe that most people can do this if they want to, and I get "responses".  I know people who are psychic, and who communicate with different spirits of the dead, but this is more on a one to one basis.  I do believe there is something in it - I just don't buy into, or even actually approve of, these kind of church/theatre type events.
And she saw that she looked like the Goddess Mothers she had just seen. ...........She left the museum juicy, full and ripe with possibilities.

hiya, good replies, I think it was a bit hit and miss and she was also not that great at being specific like when I asked her if the spirit had white hair she said she couldn't see that bit. But the other bits were true so well I would have to go more frequently to test it out a bit more.

Last Sunday I went to the Christian church HTB in South Kensington as I am feeling a bit isolated as I am out of work and I know they do have groups that meet up regularly and discuss theology and I need my brain stimulated and theology is one of my favourite subjects so I will hopefully be getting some more spiritual and intellectual stimulation soon and maybe make a few friends. They also do voluntary work and I helped out at a kids homework club yesterday which was good, helping a 6 year old read and write.

Evan..i'm not sure where this fits in to Christianity, but i can tell you..i am a Christian/Roman Catholic (but i also worship in the Church of England Churches, too.)
Many years ago i went to such a Church near to where i live, with a Roman Catholic friend of mine.
It didn't feel right to me Spiritualism/pychics in a CHURCH. i stayed for maybe ten minutes (only out of politeness to my VERY Roman Catholic friend.) Then i left
quietly and..waited for her outside.
She was quite annoyed that i left in the middle of 'Mass.' i just KNEW in my heart that it was not right to have stayed there : after all, GOD is Supernatural..and in the Bible it is said NOT to contact the dead - that said it ALL for me really.
From that point of view, be careful..as evil comes in many guises and if you KNOW !CLEARLY! something is not right..ie it is WRONG..make your own decision and Keep CLEAR!
That is my best advice to you.
Something that you KNOW is wrong will NEVER be right : evil is attractive and Curiousity without regard..ie 'come find out more about it, judge for yourself..!' often got the Caught. Snow White and the Apple, do you follow?!

i have never been back to such a thing - and i have never visited that particular Church to worship in again, although i pass it almost every day.
i also did what i thought was right and safe and..left that 'Mass' as soon as possible.
i attend 'regular' Masses at other Church Buildings of the same denomination.
