Quotations that Matter
« on: Aug 03, 2011, 05:51:53 PM »
There are many things that I've heard that have had an impact - made me sit up and take notice, re-think how I thought, re-feel what I was feeling.

Some quotes have stayed with me for years, some have pierced my consciousness and then left.
Some have re-framed my perspective, subtly or grossly, incrementally or in a sudden tectonic shift of perspective.

One of my teachers had this to say of today:

"Just for today do not Anger, do not Worry, undertake your tasks Honestly and with Gratitude and be kind to all living things."

Today, that made a difference to me.

What quotations have changed your life?

"You get what you settle for" - from the film Thelma and Louise; and I am not being facetious.  I saw that film at a time when I was definitely "settling for".  It stuck in my mind, I stopped "settling", and it changed my life.  I know it's not a particular profound or even intellectual quote, but it means a lot to me.

And "Life's a bruise" - my niece Claire, which  it sometimes is!
And she saw that she looked like the Goddess Mothers she had just seen. ...........She left the museum juicy, full and ripe with possibilities.

They remind me what I've always known so I like these ones...

'Cowards die many times, the brave die only once'

'He who seeks revenge should dig two graves'

'A focused mind can pierce through stone'

'Whether you think you can, or think you can't, you're right'

'An inch of time, an inch of gold. An inch of gold cannot buy an inch of time'

I have loads more but I'm not gonna bore everyone lol.

I love Rumi on dance:

"Dance, when you're broken open. Dance, if you've torn the bandage off. Dance in the middle of the fighting. Dance in your blood. Dance when you're perfectly free."

Also his:

"Out beyond ideas of wrongdoing and right-doing,

there is a field.  I’ll meet you there.

When the soul lies down in that grass,

the world too full to talk about.

Ideas, language, even the phrase each other

doesn’t make any sense."

And:

"What if our religion was each other? If our practice was our life? If prayer, our words? What if the temple was the earth? If forests were our church? If holy water- the rivers, lakes, and oceans? What if meditation was our relationships? If the Teacher was self-knowledge? If love was the center of our being?”

Oh I adore Rumi.  This is my favourite Rumi quote, which I had as my signature line on here for a while:

Forget safety. Live where you fear to live. Destroy your reputation. Be notorious.
And she saw that she looked like the Goddess Mothers she had just seen. ...........She left the museum juicy, full and ripe with possibilities.

'Just as we cannot see our own faces without looking into a mirror, we cannot know ourselves without looking at our relationships'

'Courage is not the absense of fear - it is the mastery of it'

'It's not what happens to you, it's how you percieve what happens to you'

'Know the different between instinct and habit. Trust your instincts, question your habits'

I just remembered another one guineapig - 'What would your current frustrations look like from the vantage point of the last days of your life?'

I don't like the he, man's default in quotes

I wrote a song to this verse of the bible:

2 Your lips cover me with kisses; your love is better than wine. 3 There is a fragrance about you; the sound of your name recalls it. No woman could keep from loving you. 4 Take me with you, and we'll run away; be my king and take me to your room. We will be happy together, drink deep, and lose ourselves in love. No wonder all women love you! 5 Women of Jerusalem, I am dark but beautiful, dark as the desert tents of Kedar, but beautiful as the draperies in Solomon's palace. 6 Don't look down on me because of my color, because the sun has tanned me. My brothers were angry with me and made me work in the vineyard. I had no time to care for myself. 7 Tell me, my love, Where will you lead your flock to graze? Where will they rest from the noonday sun? Why should I need to look for you among the flocks of the other shepherds? 8 Don't you know the place, loveliest of women? Go and follow the flock; find pasture for your goats near the tents of the shepherds. 9 You, my love, excite men as a mare excites the stallions of Pharaoh's chariots. 10 Your hair is beautiful upon your cheeks and falls along your neck like jewels. 11 But we will make for you a chain of gold with ornaments of silver. 12 My king was lying on his couch, and my perfume filled the air with fragrance.
