Title: Board Notices and Queries
Post by: EVicT on Apr 19, 2007, 12:11:16 PM
Dear GB Messageboard User,

As you may have experienced in recent months we've had some unexpected and certainly unscheduled outages on the messageboard server.  Our host Touchlight are presently moving our dedicated server to a new datacentre to secure more reliable uptime and fewer interruptions.  In order to do this our server will need to be down for a few hours whilst it's location is physically moved from one centre to another.

Although there should be no loss of data as always please back up any messages you wish to keep (file, save as from the page with the message is a simple method).  Also, as we will be using a new IP address it is possible that not everyone will be able to see the boards immediately even though they will be live early Saturday morning.  Unfortunately with our present domain host we can't make any adjustments to change this though we're looking into ways of controlling that better in the future.

I will lock the boards at approximately 7.45pm on Friday night, and they will become unavailable at about 8pm (if all goes according to schedule).  They should be back up and running (for the majority of users) in the wee hours of Saturday morning.

Apologies again for the downtime, but hopefully this will reduce unexpected outage in the future,

Lenna (EVicT)

The personal IMs were a nice touch, buuuuut Evict has done some magic to my inbox!

"Hey, Miss Diesel, you have 0 messages, 1 is new. "

Zero messages and one is new? Wot?!

Hmm...weird...I've just sent a message to someone saying that I've not heard of this problem elsewhere...figures!

Okay, is anyone else having this problem?

Can you post on:
http://boards.gingerbeer.co.uk/index.php?topic=66338.msg1731832#msg1731832 so that I can track problems on one thread.

Can you log out and log back in again for me to see if that solves it?  Thanks!  It's the first time the 'newsletter' function has been used so there may be some glitches!

I had the same problem in that it was showing that I still had a new message when I'd actually read it.

As soon as I got an IM off somebody else, the new message thing disappeared.

It's fixed now, randomly, by itself  ::)

(I tried logging in and out, and I recieved and sent IMs but it didn't change anything.)

*shrugs*

Hello Lenna,

Can I ask re the above paragraph 2 things :

1) If our IM's do get lost and we hadn't backed them up is there any way you would be able to get them back for us

2) When you say some of us may not be able to log on straight away, do we read that as Ever, or just wait another hour, try again and it should be OK ?  or is it possible *shock* that we won't ever be able to get in ?

Thanks x

1.  The server is backed up fully every night so everything on the server will be fully backed up as of midnight tonight.  If there is a disaster then we can restore the boards to the way that they looked at midnight tonight.  So, essentially the answer is yes. but only for things that happened before tonight.  Anything that happens tomorrow would not likely be saved but I am going to request an extra backup get taken at some point during the afternoon tomorrow if possible.

2.  Web serving has a rather complex way of providing information to an individuals desk top computer.  I won't go into too much detail but essentially our server will be changing it's IP address because it will no longer live in the same place (sometimes it's possible to move an IP but not in this case).  Our domain boards.gingerbeer.co.uk points the world to our IP so that people only have to remember a name, rather than an 8-13 digit number.  Each ISP (and then some) has their own schedule for updating their records.  So, whilst one ISP may check to make sure that boards.gingerbeer.co.uk is still pointing to the same place and if not update to the new location every hour, some may not do so for a couple of days.  The vast majority of people will be able to access us within a couple of hours at the max, however there will be a few people who have access trouble for a few days.  If you had problems the last time we moved the server then if you have the same ISP it's quite likely you will again.

We have managed to edit our TTL (time to live) so the majority should only have a few minutes wait!

Hope that isn't too techie, if it's not techie enough drop me an IM!

If after a couple of days you still can't get in then there are a few tricks, go to the website and drop an email to the techie inbox and I'll walk you through some of it.

Lenna

Nah thats a  8) explanation.

I'm fine re IM's and I didn't have a trouble last time Servers was swapped, but if I do this time I shall take some different ways to get to GB and work it out from there.

Many thanks for your detailed, swift response  :D

Well...we have to abort the downtime.

We've had a major hang up at the data centre and we're not being allowed to access our server.  Chris is pulling out all of the stops but we're going to abort for now.  We're going to have to do this again another time.  I'll keep you all up to date about when etc.

Sorry for the false start!

Hi, thanks for keeping us posted.

It did make me think I should clear out my IMs, but I can't save them easily. I've tried doing File, Save, but it only saves the page I'm on, and then it saves them as a web page, so I can't edit it to take out the messages I don't need...

Is there a quick way to save the entire contents of one's IM box into a Word document, please?

Thanks!

Whippy

Absent a force majeure event (surely not the London Marathon!), I do hope your contract with the data centre allowed for service credits in the event that you were denied reasonable access to your kit...  ::). Seriously, if you'd like me to look at your contract, I'd be happy to -- for beer and popcorn.  ;)

Anyway, no worries re the false start!

But when I've tried to IM two people who are shown as registered users, I get a 'can't find member' notice. Don't know if that's me, them, a glitch or what.

I have exactly the same problem - I seem to have stopped getting IMs.  I don't access GB from work so it's the only way I can pick up messages during working hours, so it would be great if it could be fixed.  Perhaps it is a sign I should be doing more work... :-\

Okay, the slow problems seem to be occurring rather frequently from reading this although I've not known about it until now.

It would help if I could gather a bit more information about what's going on.  I know that some of you are pretty technically savvy so if you could IM me with things like connection speeds, ISP platform, browser and version, time of day of problem, how long or how often it happens, area of the country etc then that would be helpful.   As much or as little as you can!

I'll be able to check out things like if it's a common browser issue, a particular area of the country issue, a particular ISP, or usage during a particularly heavy time for the server.

Thanks,

Lenna

There's an outstanding problem which may delay mail for some users (I can see AOL, yahoo and BT addresses in the queue). Hoping for that to be resolved within the next few hours.

I'm not getting emails when I get IMs but don't know if that's related.

Btw, isn't there any way to keep the travel threads when the boards are purged?  The same questions/destinations are asked again and again but the answers are lost in the purge.

I'm getting my emails back through now (and I never touched nuffin' cos I'm too lazy).

Can you send some on to me.  Just cross out your name and put mine in.  Thanks ;D

Nothing to do with the recent downtime, but I wonder if anyone tecchie can explain this?
Last week the GB site got very slow, so I checked the BBC site to check if it was my PC or ISP, and discovered that I couldn't access any other sites at all.
After re-booting both PC and modem and getting the same result, I phoned my ISP (Virgin) and got a recorded message saying that a local fault meant that broadband was temporarily unavailable in my area and would soon be rectified.
So for about half-an-hour I had no broadband connection.
No internet access.
But I could still read and post on GB. :o

Are you now on a direct feed to my brain? :-\

Mail is working, but there's an incorrect database entry at Ripe (Netherlands) which is causing some ISPs (Hotmail, Yahoo, AOL, etc) to refuse to accept mail from us as they believe it to be spam.

I've been assured that this has now been fixed and that next time they reload their database that it will respond correctly. Once this happens those ISPs should start accepting mail from us again.

Well there you go, that's service for you.

My best guess would be that Virgin had a transit problem but were still managing to peer somehow. That's about the only explanation I can think of.

For instance under DY2KE I do not have to enter any letters to send an IM, but under my other log in, yes I have two, cause sometimes I want to read and not participate or receive IM's, I have to do that to send an IM.

Hi lazybird,

I usually use Firefox on my Mac (MacBook), and GB works fine with that. (On the other hand, the Tesco site doesn't.) So, you could perhaps give Firefox a go.

I'm actually using Safari to write this, though. What URL are you using to get to the boards - directly or a link? Going straight to http://boards.gingerbeer.co.uk/ (http://boards.gingerbeer.co.uk/) does work for me in Safari.

Hi,

are you still having problems with getting onto GB?  Are you able to get to the site from any method...direct as above, or link from the main site?
Title: Re: Board Notices and Queries
Post by: Lazybird on May 27, 2007, 10:01:57 AM
I'm now using Firefox, but still can't access the boards - I can get on to the main site with no problem whether I'm using Firefox, Safari or Internet Explorer, but not the boards. I've tried using both the link and directly to the boards but no luck. With Firefox I get a message saying the connection's timed out.

I'm now using my flatmate's laptop to get on here as there's no problem with hers! She also has an ibook, uses Firefox and is on the same wireless network as me so it must be something to do with my computer. But it's only happened since the 27th - prior to that I didn't have any trouble.

I'd be really really grateful if anyone could help. I can't access gb at work and I miss it badly.

Sounds like a caching poblem.

Not sure how this works on a mac and there may be a way that mac caches IPs outside of web browsers but essentially...you need to look in 'tools' and then 'options' and clear your web cache and history.  Each of those browsers is going to have a different way of doing it and it's also going to be different on a mac than it is for me which is why I'm being a bit vague.

It's surprising though that the problem is happening both with your work computer and your home computer, presumably they are different machines.  Is the work one a mac as well?
Title: Re: Board Notices and Queries
Post by: EVicT on May 27, 2007, 10:20:40 AM
Oh, the reason why it'll be the 27th is because that's when we switched IPs and moved the server....and sometimes a machine will cache the IP.

No, it's only at home - I can't access gb at work because I don't have time to use the internet and I think it's probably blocked as I work in a primary school. Sorry - wasn't being very clear before!

Do you have the firewall enabled, do you use one?  If you do it may be worth checking that it isn't blocking the site.  Just a thought, chances are it isn't this but it's worth checking.   :)

Title: Re: Board Notices and Queries

I don't know where to post this so here goes, we used to be able to hoover over a name and then the registered name would appear ie: hoover over DY2KE and registered name Y2KBABE comes up in a little bubble.

That way when people changed their names it wouldn't matter as you could easily work out by hoovering to find their registered name.

Can't see to do that anymore.   (I hoovered over TRACEY and found the name to be TRACEY, but I didn't know a Tracey and wondered who the heck it was, after trawling thru their last posts I realise that its Brighty that I was reading).

Is there any chance we can get this old function back, it saves a lot of time and confusion.

Thanks

Aha, jad, you have just made all clear to me!  The reason it does not is because I have ticked the box to block pop-ups.  Normally, this is not a problem as the status bar at the bottom can show the URL over which I am hovering, etc., but in this instance, the status bar only gives me your number, not your name.

While I want to keep that box ticked, I can temporarily undo it if I'm trying to sort out who a new-name Beerie is. :)

Thank you.  :) :-*

Is it possible to set the boards so certain sections are hidden? Either by the admin or by personal preference. And thus have posts from hidden boards not displayed in the 'last post' threads.

As a non-woc who can no longer post in the WOC section I would prefer not to be caught out by wanting to reply to a post in 'last posts' only to discover it is in a place I am not allowed to reply.

No. We could have a debate about the last pots function, we could discuss the whole boards as logged in only, we could think about more/other sections, or ones with limited access but I am not prepared to hide sections from some users.

Sorry for the unscheduled downtime.  We've been having a few problems with mail and notices.  I talked to Chris and as there were other associated problems we decided to do a restart.  Because of our schedules it was important for us to do this immediately.

If you have any problems, let us know!

We've run an upgrade which unfortunately caused more problems than it should have...took 3 times as long as usual due to a couple of failures.

The cosmetic changes that I usually make (hover over names for identity and link on the logo) haven't been made yet due to a permissions problem but we're out of time for the moment.

Let us know if you experience any other types of problems.

Scheduled Downtime tonight (technically tomorrow) from Midnight-1am.  We're upgrading the server memory as we're hitting the limit of our current capacity.

A few more cosmetic changes to be had at that time as well!

Have you added 'webmaster@gb...' to your 'safe senders' list?  I know that we often seem to have intermittent problems with people getting through to hotmail.com addresses.  Let me know, as I may need to escalate this issue.

I have recently carried out the regular board maintenance where threads not posted in for 2 or 4  weeks are removed. I do this procedure when it's quiet on here as it slows the system down and so far have worked through Events, making Friends, Notice Board, Work and Accommodation. I suppose if it hadn't been posted in for a while it would have gone. I apologie if something important is missing but am sure you can understand I can't really go through threads by hand.

The item that the 'board testers' have been testing should now be accessible to all users.  This means that instead of uploading your avatar to to flickr or some such location you should be able to upload your image to Gingerbeer's server and have it hosted here.

You'll need to have the image on your computer in order to upload it.
It needs to be a .gif or .jpg or .png and it needs to be 'indexed colour' or 'rgb'.  If you upload your ad and it doesn't show up then not fulfilling one of these requirements is the likely cause.
Title: Re: Advertising
Post by: EVicT on Mar 04, 2008, 07:33:44 PM
As has been on the cards for over a year now (and suggested by a fair few of you) I'm finally able to implement Advertising on the messageboards.

The GB Testers have fed back their likes and dislikes of some of the options provided (flashing and movement amongst the top few dislikes) and a few will go live over the next few days.  I don't want to start by bombarding the boards with ads but the number will increase and the options change as I tweak the system.

Please remember that the advertising is there so that the messageboards can continue.  As I'm sure many of you know, the messageboards need income to sustain themselves.  They've gone from a £300/year expense to a £3,000 per year expense and this is income that Gingerbeer has never had to generate in the past.  I'm negotiating the waters between enough to generate revenue but at the same time not too much to cause too much distaste.

I absolutely want to keep Gingerbeer free because there are so many people out there who need it free.

That's great and I totally agree that it should be.  :)

But have you considered having a PayPal account for voluntary contributions? I'm sure theres a few of us who wouldnt mind donating the odd tenner every now & then.
Every little helps, & that.
Title: Re: Board Notices and Queries
Post by: EVicT on Mar 04, 2008, 08:29:41 PM
I have no problems whatsoever with donations ;D!  However I'm keeping in mind that Gingerbeer is by necessity now a private entity and I'm aware that as a result 'taking donations' may not be looked upon in the best light.  Also, I think that it would be difficult to generate the amount we need from donations alone and so advertising is still going to be a must.

That said, there is a paypal account and I can set up a 'button' almost immediately (though give me a few days as I have a lot on at the mo').

AOL seems to have blocked the site recently as I've had an email from someone else who can't access.  If you have AOL she solved the problem by using a different way of accessing the internet?  Could that be it?  I'll drop their tech a message if that is the case.

If not, please let me know what operating system you are using so that I can add it to the list of specs to try and figure out what else it could be.

Are you using AOL broadband or just their web application?  If you're not using their broadband then you should be able to open up an internet explorer window or firefox window outside of aol but I fear that it's an AOL broadband problem which means you are blocked via their firewall.

Does sound like a cookie problem.  In order for the boards to know that you are logged in and a member it needs to see a cookie stored on your computer which says who you are.  If your cookies are set to time out after a certain period of time, or if the folder where they are stored isn't readable or anything like that then it won't know that you are a member with the right to post.

Is any of that possible?

Just an FYI, I'm doing a little board reorganising!

With the new layout on the main page (general category, worksafe etc) you have the option of not seeing that category.  So, if you only want worksafe stuff showing up then you can click on the 'general category' link and it won't show the items in that category.

One section is an archive and one section is the current.  Shortly I'll move the archive but want to leave those with current info in there the chance to see old events etc.  The first thread in each explains in more detail.

Due to some ISP issues I've switched domain hosts.  This may mean some problems reaching either the site or the messageboards for a short period of time however I'm working with the new host to minimise this and make sure that the transition is a smooth as possible.  Please let us know if you encounter any problems.  You can reach me via IM, or via the website.

Would it be possible for threads that contain photos to only be visible to logged in people? E.g. the wooing & monthly photo threads. Would anyone have any objections to it?

For the obvious reason of non-members seeing them. I can't speak for others, but I often refrain from posting photos just for the solo reason that non-gingerbeeries are also free to look through all threads.

I find it is usually safer not to make assumptions about people's motivations so, not obvious.  There are any number of potential reasons and I wanted to know yours as you're the one making the request.

Any non-member who wanted to see photos would just have to sign up for a membership...it's free, it's anonymous and unless they do something less than bright and break the rules then they can have a membership for forever!

This is a public forum and there is absolutely no way for anyone to know who is seeing what.  That's why we make a point of saying not to post personal information such as phone numbers, addresses etc.  If you want to be cautious, then it's probably a good idea to not post photos of yourself, but I'm afraid that's the only realistic way of keeping your image from the prying eyes of the public.

OK, that is fine. I'd actually prefer it if all threads were only visible after logging in, I'm sure it must be some deterrent for people to have to create a login rather than just browsing through. Anyhow, I've not had any problems with previously posting photos, I was just asking if that's something possible and preferable. Not a problem, I'll stay away from the wooing then.  :D

I do think about the pros and cons of making the site completely private, but other than the annoyance for those who just don't fancy logging in I also think about the the people out there who really need this site but just don't have the ability for whatever reason to sign up.

It's certainly possible to make sections of the site private...but I think that defeats the purpose as well ???

Anyway...I'm sure there are plenty of other ways to get you wooed!  :D

Hi, I've had it happen a couple of times to me, can you tell me which browser you're using?  I was using Firefox 2.0 (until about a minute ago when my computer died and I'm now experimenting with 3 to see if it was a Firefox issue or if it's really time to actually go out and BUY (oh the horror) a new computer (though this one does seem to be overheating)...rather than scavenge parts and put another one together again*).

Because it happens so infrequently I won't be able to tell whether it's the browser for a little while so if you can tell me what you're using then that would help.

Please can you explain why some pictures on GB come out so big and others are restricted by the sizing thingy on here?
Like this post of Fox's - the pic is a decent size:

How can we wangle it so all pics come out bigger than the piddly size we seem to be usually restricted to?

Thanks,

Images are restricted because they are so huge and screw around with the alignment on the page.  That image for instance is 700k and at 1496px wide it's also wider than many monitors.  This has gotten it's way through because it's a hyperlink to an image saved elsewhere.  You can upload an image to GB using the 'upload file' option though there is a file size limit...maybe I'll increase that as it was stingy from when we were on a smaller server.

(Put this in the wrong place)

Has someone been messing with the CSS?

Getting the following problems:

- blue background on 'logout' and 'print' buttons gone, making them hard to see (Firefox 2)
- Font on forum listing page squished (Firefox 2 + IE6)
- On individual posts (not all, just some) all content being pushed down weirdly - line under thread title and reply info not in right place) (FF2 + IE6)
- Logo appearing in light blue box not transparent background on gradient (IE6)
- When sending an IM the recipient's name is appearing below the box it should appear in.

This looks to be deliberate...

If you add more than one person they each appear on a separate line, with a little 'x' to remove them.

Can I confirm that the missing image for most people has now returned?  The fix was a 'clear cache' operation?

I thought they had fixed the 'hover real names' thing was fixed in 2.0 but I guess not so I'll look for hack for 2.0

- On individual posts (not all, just some) all content being pushed down weirdly - line under thread title and reply info not in right place) (FF2 + IE6)
- Logo appearing in light blue box not transparent background on gradient (IE6)

Just taken a look at the post issue in IE6.  There's a specific IE6 css that I'll take a look at (it went from 1.15 with one style sheet for almost everything to 2.0b4 with 8 different style sheets).

The lack of ability for IE6 to display that image is going, I'm afraid, to be a cosmetic that I won't spend too much time trying to fix.  We've got something like 13% of users using IE6 and 53% using IE7 so I'll make sure it's usable for IE6 users but need to focus on IE7 (and Firefox because it's the biggest 'other' platform).

Working on the rest!

Have you tried the 'cache clear' that seems to have worked for other people with the missing background image problems?  The vertical scroll bar issue has been mentioned somewhere on SMF...but not sure where...is the entire image showing with a non-movable scroll bar or is the cell too small for the image and the scroll bar is active?

I'm afraid the answer is not yet.  It would seem that nobody on SMF has figured out a way to do this with 2.0.  I've put in a request and am hoping that it's added to the build for 2.0rc1 but presently the only recommendation I've had is to turn off the option for people to create their own names...worry not, I won't be taking that advice...no fool here!

Help please....

A board member is having trouble messaging me. Apparently I have blocked her. I don't know how that would have happened, unless it was an accident.

I've had a good look at my setting etc & can't find anything wrong.

Is there any instructions that I can go through to remove a block please?

Or could it be something she might have done on her profile?

Under profiles, and personal messaging theres an ignorelist, if u or her have added either name to it then that could be why its blocked..

Good Morning EVicT

I received the following mail this morning, it was not in my gb personal message mail box, so

1. Can you confirm that it is from you and not from a phishing site or spoof? - I believe that such sites include almost identical content with just a small detail that can give them access to my computer, so the inclusion of proper links is nothing unusual for such phishing sites.

2. What are the changes that you refer to

3. Will I have to re-register to confirm my acceptance of the new terms and conditions

Thanks

"Hello!

I've tried sending the following message (in a variety of formats) on numerous occasions over the past couple of months but there has been a glitch and only a few have received it. Apologies if you are one of the few who have received it three (or four) times but there's more info this time!

***

We have had a change to the Registration Agreement which you can read here: http://boards.gingerbeer.co.uk/index.php?action=register

Anyone who has signed up in the last six months will have agreed to it however those were were registered before this should take a look. Continued use of the messageboards constitutes your agreement to the new registration agreement.

A few quick updates: There is now a Gingerbeer membership scheme in place. Find info here: http://boards.gingerbeer.co.uk/index.php?topic=86566.0 where you can also find merchandise to purchase and that Paypal Button that has oft been requested.

You may have seen that there is a competition running to win two free tickets to Opening night for the London Lesbian and Gay Film Festival here: http://boards.gingerbeer.co.uk/index.php?topic=88013.0

You can always keep up with Gingerbeer by signing up for the general newsletter here: http://www.gingerbeer.co.uk/newsletter

i'm sure EVicT will be along later to confirm, however i can say:

1) It's real.

2) The new changes are on the link given, it is safe to follow.

3) No you don't have to re-register, just read the new agreement, and if you're happy with it you stay, if you're not you need to delete as using the boards implies agreement.

(EVicT has been trying to send out this newsletter for a month or so but there's been problems the software meaning not everyone has been receiving it, personally i've had it 4 times now! ;D)

Nope, but then it's been a couple of years since i last read them. i think there's some rewording around trans inclusion but not sure about the rest. For me the exact word changes didn't seem too important, more whether i still agreed with the whole thing.

I agree, it is more out of curiosity that I would like to know what the changes are. It is a thing that I have about knowing the difference.

Yes indeed as Jad said (thanks), it's a legit document, however, it was supposed to send via personal messages.  It would seem that there is still a glitch in the matrix!

I'll check that out (sorry testers) and come back to you.  As far as the registration agreement goes, there are some minor changes like making a valid email address a requirement (so those of you who didn't receive this via email - I got 200+ bouncebacks need to update your account details), we now have site wide terms and conditions which you also agree to.  The trans inclusion stuff was edited a while back but worth looking at if interested.

There is no need to re-register, but having now given notice to all members, if you remain on the messageboards then you agree to abide by these updated Ts & Cs.

The place you add is in personal messages (where it's always been) but since your last system update, anyone in that list now has their posts hidden in the main threads as well :)
(but not in personal or forum the 'last posts' views)

Title: Ignore Boards Options
Post by: Terra on Oct 21, 2009, 10:22:08 PM

The GB message board now has a new feature available which will allow members to ignore particular boards of the forum that they prefer not to view posts from.

It is available from within your ‘Profile’ settings.   When you click on the ‘Profile’ button you will see a new link on the left hand menu named ‘Ignore Boards Options’.   Once you click on it you will see a list of all the available boards.   Simply place a tick in the box(es) for the boards you want to ignore then click the ‘Save Profile’ button.

Once you have put one or more boards on ignore:-

1.     When using the ‘Search’ function posts from ignored boards will not be included in search results.

2.     The ‘Show unread posts since last visit’ function and also the ‘View the most recent posts on the forum’ link will not include posts from ignored boards.

3.     The ‘New Posts’ indicator will not show up against ignored boards.

4.     You will still be able to view posts from within ignored boards by clicking on those boards.   If you click on an ignored board all the threads will still show up as normal and can be read if you choose to click on them.

If you click on their name it opens up their profile and then you can scroll to the bottom and there's a thing saying 'send this member a personal message' or go to messages on the toolbar below your name/pic then click new message and type the persons name in (it auto lists similar names so you get the right person). Then complete and send :D

Good luck!

For anyone watching this thread...

I have a new person joining the GB team, Nova on here.  She's going to be working with me on getting GB to generate some income.  Over the past few years of illness, I've just about managed to keep GB alive, though it was touch and go last summer.  You may see Nova posting bits and pieces now and then.  She has admin level access so that she can update and change the advertising on the site but otherwise, she's not acting in any admin function.

Gingerbeer has a lot of growing to do and hopefully we'll now be able to get on with that.

Post by: ScarletBea on Aug 10, 2011, 07:50:19 AM
Hi, thanks for that, and I clearer all cookies and everything, but the format is very strange.
I've got the main forums and thread titles, and reply box in a huge font (you'd probably call it medium hehe) and then the right side and top title in super small. I usually have got everything small, it just feels so strange to be writing in such a big font.
Title: Re: Board Notices and Queries

I'm not too keen on clearing out my cache as there are things in it that help me with other sites but if that is the only
way to deal with the reply box I suppose I'll have to, I too have the same size differences as Scarlet Bea. And did I just imagine it or when you click on the gingerbeer logo, wasn't it a link to the main site?
Title: Re: Board Notices and Queries
Post by: purelybyaccident on Aug 10, 2011, 08:41:53 AM
I've dealt with the reply box, but I must admit I'm not too keen on the new format, quoted posts in blue is rather irritating when the post quoting is in blue, the profile format settings seem all a little 'basic' and everything seems to be so s p r e a d out. I suppose I'll get used to it though except the tiny text in comparison to the main text, just noticed when replying the topic Summary is totally different as well.

agreed about the cache, unfortunately that is the fix.

With the size they have specified an overall font size rather that separate items of the css.  I've spent hours trying to reconfigure and this is the best I can do (any volunteers?).  so, as the main header text was configured quite small, I have had to increase the entire format to a size larger so that the header text can be read.

there shouldn't be any los of functionality in the profile, it's just formatted differently.

i forgot the link, will put that back when I get a chance.

If you reply window is too wide, then clear the cache which fixes it.

Hello EVicT

Many thanks for all the upgrades.  Can you explain how to clear the cache to fix wide windows.

Thanks, RC.

Yep -my reply window is huge and I can't post properly. Is this deliberate? ;)
How do I get it back to a useable size?

I've had to reply to see if anything was different but it looks perfectly normal to me and anyway if it looks too big why can't people simply reduce their screen size sheesh

Emptying your cache works for the reply box BB and RC, it depends what browser you have, here is a link that shows you how to do it with various browsers.

http://www.wikihow.com/Clear-Your-Browser%27s-Cache

I've already gotten used to the other changes and find them positive.

The only problem I have is that each post - and IMs too - have a huge blank space at the top, then a horizontal line across the screen, and then the text of the post/IM comes about halfway down the box.  So when you click into a post you have to scroll down to find the text.  It's very weird!

Try the clearing cache thing, it worked for me.

See above the link that pba posted earlier today.

Then GB would be 'normal' but all my other open windows would be too small...

Hi Evict, the mobile version looks very squishy, replies get indented and when there's more than a couple you end up with a column of words.

Do I have a dirty cache? Would you help me clean it?  :P

I'm afraid I'm not too savvy with the filth quality of phones, too many types etc!

If the full version isn't working well then try the mobile version (http://boards.gingerbeer.co.uk/index.php?wap2).

I have tried clearing the cache but all instructions I find to clear the cache (it's Firefox 6 and I tell you finding out what version I was running was difficult enough, what is the matter with them that they don't make it easy to check this?) don't work.  The one PBA gave (thanks though) and the ones I found by googling 'clear cache Firefox 6'.  It doesn't look at all like the way it says it is going to look and I can't do the things I am told to do.  I managed to click something about clearing the cache eventually and then firefox just stopped responding and I had to go out out of it.  (Windows announced it could not sort out why firefox was not responding)

Aarrgh. I have had enough.  The elongated posting box appears on some boards and not others.

Comments like why can't you just change the size of the screen sheesh make me pretty mad. I can't bl00dy read it and it is an access issue.

Firefox 6 is a brand new version, only out now for a few weeks.  It's possible that as with all new browsers there are bugs that will be fixed along the way.

I'm not able to look for instructions on clearing the cache on Mozillas's site right now for you but maybe someone will look it up to help you out. Usually however, in the 'help' and then 'about' you'll find the version and there will also be help topics within the help menu for things such as clearing your browser.

If you are unable to resolve your browser issues then maybe roll back to a previous version or try a different browser.

Howdy folks, because of a problem of posts disappearing I had to take the boards down for a couple of hours (approx 2am-3.45am) to run some repairs.  Repairs seem to have worked and posts reappeared, I don't think anything else should have happened but let me know if it did.

I've started receiving notifications to my email account when another poster has replied to a topic that i have previously replied to.  Seems with the change to the new GB format?

If i click the link, i can request no further notifications on that topic.

But how do i alter the account settings so i don't get any notifications in the first place?

roobarb,

If you click on "Profile" and look on the left hand side of the page you will see "Modify Profile". On that list click on "Notifications". The first setting you will see on that page should be "Turn notification on when you post or reply to a top." Be sure that box is NOT ticked. You will also be able to see all the threads you currently have active notifications for and have the option to unnotify.  :D

Content site is having some issues at present, we're working on it.  It works a bit, just keep hitting refresh until you get what you want!   Bad timing I'm afraid as I'm about to leave for the party...though I don't doubt I'll be at it again tonight after the fact.

We've migrated the content site to a new host so some of you may have issues seeing it.  If there was a delay last time we migrated then you may have a similar delay if you're with the same ISP.  Otherwise, kick the tires for me and let me know if you see anything off.

Cheers!

I have a query, which i sent to the Webmaster last week. As i got no reply i thought I would put it up here, since i couldnt find another way to contact the administrator as the site didnt allow me to message her either............so here is the message I sent last week, perhaps someone could help me with my enquiry please?

Hi there, i just thought I'd write and mention that a few years ago i joined gingerbeer, using the same email address and encountered the same problem as i am experiencing now - once i had been accepted & activated my account and filled in my profile, i found i could no longer post unless i used the activate link on the original email you sent me, which is now the only way i can join in the site.  I have tried resetting my password but i only get the message that Gingerbeer has no record of my email address, although this cannot be the case since i have received an email of acceptance to that address.  As I said, this happened the last time I enrolled.  So i am puzzled as to what the problem might be and wonder if you may have an answer to the difficulty please?

Best wishes,  Jaques

I've removed a bunch of bans that were instituted on the site.  There have been a few people who can't access because of someone elses ban.  I have therefore removed a bunch of them and will grant amnesty to anyone who has been under a permanent ban.

WEIRD: Jacques' avatar has been added to at least four other Beeries' posts, and is not showing with Jacques' posts at all  ???

I've tried deleting it from mine (nothing personal, Jacques, it's just Not Me!) but on my tablet I can only see the link to my own avatar.

How can this happen ???

Additional info: the four places I've found this are all people on the "currently on line" list, but of course there could be more:

lust for life, horse, Ms_omega, Malibu (there may be typos in these names as I didn't manage to copy them).

Also, just before this happened something weird happened to my screen, and it kept automatically scrolls up to the top of the page.  I closed the page and reopened it which seemed to help, but then this happened.

Hello,

Personally I am actually not an active user of Gingerbeer, my query concerns the opening of another profile as the facilitator of a group.

I facilitate monthly meetings of Kink Starters London, a group for LBT* newbies to kink/BDSM and/or the kink scene. As Kink Starters London I would like to open a profile here to post invites for meetings in the dungeon.

Does this fall within the regulations of Gingerbeer?

Many thanks, gee

It used to be that any event for profit had to go into  the 'Commercial Events' section. But I've noticed and wondered whether this has changed as, especially in the dungeon, events are advertised all the time. So, if others do, I don't see why not. But personally, I think all should go into CE.

Yes, you do that, and then you can click on the 'edit ignore list' ('edit buddy list' is the default).
You can then type in the username of whoever you don't want to see posts from. Can be anyone. Not related to a buddy list.
You'll see that they have posted, but not the message content (unless you click on 'see this post')
